About

Kenseikai Ireland was founded in Dublin in 2008 by Nick Johnston and Bjorn Fehr in Dublin, Johnston having been granted the use of the Kenseikai name and mon by the late Fujii Okimitsu Sensei.  Fehr Sensei has since returned to his native Germany where he has opened a dojo in Köln.

Kenseikai Ireland is affiliated with Kendo na hÉireann, the Irish Kendo Federation.

The original Kenseikai dojo was founded in Saga City in Kyushu in the early 1950’s by Fujii Sensei’s own teacher, Kamo Sensei, a student of Yamamoto Harusuke Sensei from Tosa. Yamamoto Sensei was a student of the last undisputed head of the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, Oe Masaji Sensei (b.1852 – d. 1927).

Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu may be translated as “Peerless Direct-transmission Eishin Style” and is now one of the most common styles of Iai.  The ryu developed from a system formulated by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto Shigenobu in the late sixteenth century.
