Iaido training is based on the practice of kata, techniques designed to overcome an opponent or opponents in a specific context or situation. They consist of a series of movements and actions to be performed in a prescribed manner. This is a traditional method of training and the origins of many kata are very old.
The number, content and applications of kata vary, depending on the school (or “ryu”) of iaido being studied. The curricula of these ryu have been carefully developed and formulated so that there is a progressive sequence to the kata; as the student develops and learns the techniques in sequence, the kata became increasingly sophisticated and technically demanding.
